Stop Being True to Yourself if You Want to Succeed

“Prefer being rejected at your new standard than being accepted at your old one” - Dr. Benjamin Hardy
Why your future self needs you to get uncomfortable.
If you want to become a successful solopreneur, you need to stop being true to yourself—and start being true to who you want to become.
“Being true to yourself” has great intentions. I used to preach it too. But this morning I read a commencement speech by Adam Grant that stopped me in my tracks.
He told a story from grad school, when he was terrified of public speaking. He knew that if his ideas were going to make an impact, he had to find his voice.
So he started volunteering to give guest lectures around campus.
The feedback? Brutal.
One student told him his anxiety was so palpable, it made the whole class start shaking.
But then he said something that woke me up:
“I wasn’t being true to myself. I was being true to who I wanted to become.”
That’s it. That’s the game.
Not comfort. Not confidence. Courage is the currency of transformation.
After working with hundreds of solopreneurs over the past six years, I can tell you this:
“I just need to be true to myself” is often code for:
“I’m avoiding the thing I know I need to do—because deep down, I’m afraid I’m not good enough.”
Growth demands discomfort.
Success requires self-expansion.
This is true in business, in love, in health, and in leadership.
Because your business will never outgrow the person running it.
So if you want to be great, stop fighting for your comfort zone—and start fighting for your potential.
The goals you have require you to follow through on the things you’re afraid of.
And those fears? They’re often just invitations to prove that you’re the kind of person who can do it.
Now, fast forward one year from today.
What would you need to have accomplished to feel proud?
Take that vision and ask yourself:
What do I need to follow through on today to make that real?
Let your goals shape your behavior—not your past.
To become a successful solopreneur, your potential must drive your decisions—not your comfort zones.
