Story has it there was one pivotal moment in the making of the original Top Gun when the producers found themselves between a rock and a hard place…

…or more literally speaking, stuck between shitty options and a lack of resources to make an epic movie worthy of Tom Cruise’s fame.

I heard this story on a podcast recently: during pre-production the team was desperate. 

No way to build believable ships or jets back in the ’80s.

They even considered hiring model-makers, but every miniature looked fake, and fake was unacceptable.

They were stuck.

The studio was in real trouble.

Then someone pitched an idea crazier than building shitty looking models:

“Has anyone ever contacted the Navy?”

To everyone else, that sounded absurd—Hollywood studios don’t call the Pentagon.

But one producer did. He somehow reached a decision-maker in the U.S. Navy and laid out their problem.

Turns out, the Navy was struggling to recruit new sailors.

In that moment they realized they could help each other:

 • Producers needed real ships and planes to make a film worthy of Tom Cruise.

 • The Navy needed a 2-hour commercial starring the world’s biggest movie star.
